Testing Tool: HP Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) / Quality Center (QC)

HP ALM (formally known as Quality Center / QC) is widely used test management tool. Although the tool has many uses, following list of features are used by majority in the testing community.

1. Create / upload requirements:
User can create and upload requirement in this area. Requirements can be linked to test cases to create the traceability matrix. This is a quick and visual way to identify which requirements are missing test coverage.

2. Create Test plans / Test cases:
User can create test cases or upload already written test cases to this area. Each test case contains test steps (Step Name, Description and Expected outcome). Test cases can be structured in to folders as shown below.

3. Creating Test Labs and execute test cases:
“Test Lab” is utilized to execute test cases. Application under Test is verified against the expected values of the test case and depending on the outcome test case can be passed or failed. Status is updated in the test lab area to indicate the execution progress.

4. Create and track defects:
Defects can be created using HP ALM. Created defects can be assigned to the appropriate development team member and link to a failed test case.

5. Dashboard reporting:
ALM has a Dashboard functionality that can be utilized to reports from a click of a button.

6. Test automation tools integrations (tools like QTP)
Test automation tools like QTP can be integrated to ALM in order to execute tests automatically.
